Ideal homes to have 200Mbit/s Virgin Media broadband

Virgin Media has announced that it will premiere a 200Mbit/s broadband service at the Home of the Future show at the Ideal Home show at Earl's Court tomorrow.

Virgin said the service is unlike anything the public has seen before and that the demo would give users a taste of things to come.

To whet the appetite, Virgin said that using the new 200Mbit/s speeds users could download albums in three seconds, an hour's worth of TV in 16 seconds, and entire HD movies in three minutes and 42 seconds.

Ashley Stockwell, executive director of brand and marketing, said such speeds would revolutionise the way in which homes consumed content by enabling whole households to enjoy cutting-edge entertainment, through an array of gadgets all over the home.

"By pushing the boundaries of broadband we hope to drive a change in the way Brits enjoy and experience digital entertainment and exciting new services," he said.

While Virgin has been keen to push the consumer benefits of the super fast speeds, businesses will no doubt also be looking on with interest.

The firm has been trialling the huge speeds in Kent since 2009 and has recently started trials in Coventry too.

Virgin will also be showcasing a wide range of 3DTV content on Sony's 3D ready Bravia model HX903 to demonstrate upcoming developments in the TV space that customers will be able to receive.

V3.co.uk will be at the show on Monday to see the 200Mbit/s trial in action and report back on its performance.

<p>200MB/s for home users is primarily a gimmick, and this is an offer for home users.</p> <p>Why are V3 covering this news? How does this apply to my business? </p> <p>You guys, as a website, give real mixed messages for your audience. On one hand, you seem to direct yourselves at enterprise, but on the other hand you're covering stuff for home users.</p> <p>What we want to hear is about dual-bonded SDSL and how it applies to our business environment, not how 200MB/s might help my family, at home, download a movie more quickly.</p> <p>Talk about mixed messages from a once-popular web site :(</p>

<p>Be fair Rob, there's no throttling on the Virgin 50Meg service so they'd be unlikely to cap 100M or 200M either.</p> <p>The 1.5Gig cap you mention applies to their 10Meg service and only at certain times of day: </p> <p><a href="http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/traffic.html">http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/traffic.html</a></p> <p>Say what you want about Virgin but their broadband product is miles ahead of anyone else.</p>

<p>It's all good and well showing off what can be done and what will be available to consumers in the near future. However I'd like to see a commitment to rolling this out not only to selected regions but improving the service to rural users who are ever increasingly being left behind on dated ADSL technology. With no forthcoming plans to provide Cable broadband never mind fibre optic services to areas stuck with DSL, there is a huge gap in the market being left to rot. </p>

<p>Download HD movies in 3 minutes, 42 seconds!! How is that possible as a HD movie can be anything over 4gb, but when you download more than 1.5gb they throttle your line speed by 75%. Virgin are utter rubbish.</p>
