Gmail.com addresses still not an option for UK users

It appears that Google's plans to offer all UK users of its Gmail service the ability to swap their googlemail.com with a gmail.com suffix, are yet to take effect.

The web giant announced earlier this week that five years after it launched the UK version of its online email client, it has finally wrestled back the right to use the Gmail suffix, as opposed to the longer version.

Greg Bullock, software engineer at Google, said that 'soon' anyone with a googlemail address would be able to upgrade to the gmail.com alternative.

Several members of the V3.co.uk team have now received the following message in their accounts: "Google Mail is becoming Gmail in the UK. Want to switch to xxxx@gmail.com?". However, following this link brings the reader to an error page.

It seems that Google needs a little longer before it can offer us all a more manageable Gmail address.

I've been happily logging in under with the gmail.com suffix for years. My girlfriend also set one up a couple of years ago under @googlemail.com but using @gmail.com has always worked fine too. My experience seems to have been the same as that of paul bhogal and Martin.

Go to settings in your accounts in gmail, you can switch from there, see gmail blogspot for full details, its works as I have just done it, hurrah for science, wooo!

Read your article last night, some five hours after your posting. I was curious enough to see what happened about changing my address to Gmail and went through the process, also getting the 'error' message although my account details showed the conversion to Gmail immediately. This morning (14 hours later) it's working flawlessly and as you can see I'm using the Gmail version. Works for me because I've had to use 'googlemail' since 2003/4.

This is all totally bizarre. I signed up for gmail over a year ago and have been happily giving out my address as "gmail" rather than "googlemail" for that entire period with no problems. It works, it always has. ... and their link is still giving a 403 Forbidden message.

If you have a UK googlemail.com account, you should already be able to receive email at your_user_name@gmail.com. It has been like this for me since I signed up in 2008. The change seems to be only a matter of marketing.

log in to your gmail account, go into settings and accounts and switch from @googlemail.com to @gmail.com.

What! I have had this E-mail address for over a year now. Google know's my location (London) so i dont see what the fuss is about.
