German tablet PC maker WePad has decided to change its name to WeTab in what it says is an attempt to differentiate its products from the iPad, but what could more realistically be the result of pressure from Apple.
The firm made the announcement last Friday on the same day as Apple released international shipping and pricing information for the much-hyped iPad. Coincidence?
"To clearly differentiate our products within the international market for tablet computers, as of today we have changed the product name of our tablet computer to WeTab," read a statement from the tablet maker.
"Similarly, the company will now trade under WeTab GmbH. This change only concerns the name of the product and company. All other particulars and pre-orders are not affected."
Whether or not the name change has been brought about by some unwanted interference from Apple's lawyers, the new device, which is available for pre-order, represents yet another piece of good-looking competition in the tablet space.
Available in a 16GB Wi-Fi only version for €449 or a 32GB 3G version for €569, the device could be a decent alternative for tablet fans, although whether it can overcome the might of Apple's marketing millions and its army of fans remains to be seen.
