Samsung gives away Galaxy S to peeved iPhone4 users

Samsung has started to give away free Galaxy S devices to disgruntled iPhone users on Twitter, as part of a campaign to promote the firm's Android handset over Apple's new phone.

A Twitter account by the name @samsungukmobile has sent several messages to other members of the site offering them a free device, after they had updated their Twitter feed complaining about their iPhone 4.

One user, Tiffany Nieuwland, had written, "Don't know if its O2 or iPhone 4 but for 2nd time this week call dropped and I can't call or send texts! Unacceptable!" on 21 July, and was then contacted by Samsung to be offered a new phone.

Nieuwland's bio confirms she works in marketing for Condé Nast, but the rest of the accounts seem genuine, removing, for the most part, any suspicion of some clever social media stealth marketing.

Samsung confirmed it was a genuine account and explained it had undertaken the move in response to a growing wave of dissatisfaction from consumers with other handsets.

"We decided to contact a cross section of individuals to offer them a free Samsung Galaxy S as a replacement, as we're confident that once people have the phone in their hands, they'll see how impressive it is for themselves," a spokesperson said.

Samsung has also launched an advert mocking Apple's antenna issues, in which it uses the image of a full bar of signal to promote the new handset.

Nice to see the competition take advantage of the ammunition it's been given, isn't it?
