SMEs need technology that's easy to use, and easy to install and maintain by a smaller in-house IT team.
And it has to be quick to pay back the initial investment in the form of benefits to the growing business. On top of that if it can grow with the business and not hold it back, even better.

While in the past smaller businesses had to do without or build their own systems, the major vendors are increasingly seeing SMEs as a vital part of their market, tailoring software to their needs as a result.
And technologies such as broadband are allowing smaller businesses to compete with their larger rivals in ways not thought of before.
