Since the arrival of Samsung's original Galaxy Note phablet in 2012, big screen smartphones have become increasingly popular in the Android world. This is because the added screen real estate makes it quicker, easier and generally more pleasant to take advantage of the smartphone's more advanced capabilities, and use it for things like document editing, or typing an email.
As a result, even with though Samsung's now released its latest 2014 smartphone, the Galaxy S5, some users are justifiably wondering how it compares to the company's older but larger Galaxy Note 3 phablet.
Design and build
Visually, despite both being unmistakably Samsung-built handsets, the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 3 look quite different.
This is primarily because of the difference in size, with the Galaxy S5 measuring in at 142x73x8.1mm and the Galaxy Note 3 a larger 151x79x8.3mm. The Galaxy Note 3 is also significantly heavier than the 145g Galaxy S5, weighing 168g.
The two phones also feature different textures to their removable backplates. The Galaxy S5 has a perforated, slightly rubberised polycarbonate back plate while the Note houses a faux leather effect.
Holding the two smartphones, we found the Galaxy S5's lighter weight, smaller size and slightly rubberised backplate made it far more comfortable to hold than the Galaxy Note 3, which to anyone without giant sized hands will feel slightly cumbersome to use one handed.
The Galaxy S5 also seems more robustly built than the Galaxy Note 3. This is likely because Samsung has designed the Galaxy S5 to meet IP67 certification standards, making the handset the only one of the two that is dust and water resistant.
Beyond this, there are a number of more subtle design variations differentiating the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 3. The Galaxy S5 is the only one of the two to feature a built in fingerprint scanner and heart rate monitor, while Galaxy Note 3 is the only phone to come loaded a stowable S Pen Stylus - more on these later.
Winner: Galaxy S5.
Both the Samsung Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 3 use Samsung's custom Super Amoled display technology. Specifically, the Galaxy S5 features a 5.1in, 1920x1080, 432ppi, Super Amoled touchscreen while the Galaxy Note 3 features a 5.7in Super Amoled 1080x1920, 386 ppi display.
The inclusion of Samsung's Super Amoled technology is no bad thing. In the past we've found Super Amoled displays to be among the finest currently available. This is because the technology not only offers all the benefits of normal Amoled screens, which are designed to display deeper and richer blacks by electrically charging each individual pixel to generate colours, it also works to reduce the screen's power consumption.
Super Amoled displays do this by integrating the capacitive touchscreen layer directly into the display instead of overlaying it on top, as with regular Amoled screens. The practice removes the need to charge two components at once, thus reducing the display's power consumption.
