Ethernet storage firm Coraid has unveiled a tool for better analysing storage performance and also announced a partnership with analytics specialist Splunk to handle large-scale machine data held in Coraid-based storage infrastructure.
Coraid's EtherCloud Insight, set for general release in the fourth quarter of 2013, is claimed as the first of its kind to provide visibility across the entire network into the distributed storage infrastructure.
The tool makes use of software sensors running in servers and Coraid's own storage appliances to collect data on metrics such as throughput, latency and input/output operations per second, without impacting on the performance or reliability of the storage or network, according to the firm. It supports servers running Windows, Linux, Solaris and VMware.
Meanwhile, Coraid announced that its EtherDrive storage arrays are qualified to interoperate with Splunk Enterprise for high-performance data collection, indexing and analytics.
The firm said that its Virtual Direct Attached Storage (VDAS) technology for connecting storage arrays over Ethernet makes it simple to connect these up to Splunk's software while scaling up resources as required.
Splunk Enterprise is used to collect machine-generated data in real time from virtually any source, including servers, databases, networks, telecoms equipment and sensors, then analyse and visualise it.
Doug Dooley, Coraid vice president of product management, said the partnership demonstrated the flexibility and power of using an open system architecture.
