Korean technology firm LG has developed what it says is the world's first Quad HD (QHD) in-plane switching (IPS) LCD, 2560x1440, 538ppi smartphone display.

As well as boasting a four-times higher resolution than all current smartphone displays, the test 5.5in Quad screen that LG showed off is also the world’s thinnest, measuring in at 1.21mm, according to the firm.

Vice president and head of LG Display's IT and Mobile Development Group, Dr Byeong-Koo Kim, said the display will offer users unparalleled visuals, promising the company will continue working to create further improvements to its screen technologies.

"LG Display, which pioneered the high-resolution mobile market with introduction of the world's first full-HD smartphone panel in 2012, again opens new possibilities with the successful application of QHD technology," said Kim. "With this breakthrough, LG Display will continue to raise new standards for mobile resolution and lead the mobile display market."

LG claims the screen will let users view full PC versions of webpages distortion free, and play Blu-ray quality videos. It is currently unclear when LG plans to release a smartphone featuring a Quad HD display and at the time of publishing the company had not responded to V3's request for comment.

The display announcement comes just after LG unveiled its latest flagship G2 smartphone. The G2 is the latest handset from LG and is designed to wrestle control of the top-end market from current rulers Samsung and Apple. There is currently no confirmed UK release date for the G2, though network carrier Three has confirmed it will launch "soon".
