Google has launched its latest entry into the smart TV market with Chromecast.

The company said that Chromecast would allow users to connect their sets to a number of premium streaming video services with HD-quality pictures.

The device, which connects to a set's HDMI port, will allow users to connect with video services through multiple devices and to control the player on desktops, notebooks and mobile devices. The Chromecast will debut in the US at $35.

“To help make it easy to bring your favorite online entertainment to the biggest screen in your house – the TV – we’re introducing Chromecast. Chromecast is a small and affordable device that you simply plug in to your high-definition (HD) TV and it allows you to use your phone, tablet or laptop to "cast" online content to your TV screen. It works with Netflix, YouTube, Google Play Movies & TV and Google Play Music, with more apps like Pandora coming soon,” wrote Google senior vice president of Android, Chrome and apps Sundar Pichai.

“With Chromecast, we wanted to create an easy solution that works for everyone, for every TV in the house.”

The Chromecast will aim to enter a growing market for home entertainment appliances. The growth of streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu has helped to expand not only a console market dominated by Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, but also a new crop of dedicated streaming appliances such as the Apple TV and Roku player.

The Chromecast release comes alongside an announcement from Google on a new Nexus 7 tablet. The new device will have a higher resolution and will run the latest version of the company's Android Jelly Bean operating system.
