Cloud storage firm Dropbox has released an app for the Windows 8 operating system, enabling users to open, edit, and save stored files on Windows 8 devices.

It adds to the relatively small selection of apps currently available on the Windows 8 platform.

"We just released Dropbox for your Windows 8 device. Now you can enjoy photos, videos, and other stuff in your Dropbox in the whizzy new Windows experience," Dropbox wrote in a blog post for the release.

Dropbox lets users handle files like documents, photos, and videos. Files are saved to the company's cloud and can be accessed across a variety of platforms.

Users can use the new application to share files with their Facebook and Twitter contacts using the Windows 8 People app. Dropbox will also allow users to send out links to files using the Windows 8 Mail app.

The release of the app comes following recent additions to Dropbox last year. Last August, two-factor authentication was added to the service. The addition means users would need their password and a security code to login to their account.

Dropbox decided to make the security addition following a data breach which led to the release of users' emails and passwords. In a separate breach, a Dropbox employee's email was also hacked for user information last August.

The new app adds to the slowly growing application marketplace of Windows 8. Google recently announced that it had no plans to bring its Gmail and Drive apps to the operating system. The search giant said it was not interested in the platform because of its currently small user base.
