Toshiba unveils 1TB per platter hard disks

Toshiba's Storage Products division has unveiled its first family of disk drives with a 1TB per platter capacity, a year after rivals Seagate and Hitachi announced similar products.

The new hard drive models mark the re-entry of Toshiba into the 3.5in hard drive market, following its purchase of part of Western Digital's 3.5in assets earlier this year, but also in recognition of the growing demand for storage driven by consumer creation of video and other media content.

The snappily named DT01AxA range is going into volume production this month, and will be available in several spindle speeds in capacities of 3TB, 2TB and 1.5TB, and feature the 6Gbit/s Serial ATA (Sata) interface for greater data transfer rates.

Toshiba said that its new drives feature low power consumption when idle, partly by lowering their spindle speed and also utilise quiet seek operation to decrease noise to just 25dB, and will target PCs, consumer electronics, and the external storage device markets.

"We pride ourselves on being able to offer storage devices to meet our customer every requirement," said Martin Larsson, vice president of Toshiba Electronics Europe.

"The new DT01AxA range further cements Toshiba's position as the only vendor to develop and supply a complete storage product line up of SSDs and 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch HDDs."

However, Toshiba lags behind other vendors in coming up with 1TB per platter disks, as Seagate unveiled its first such drives last year, followed by Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (GST) later in 2011.

Toshiba is now the third largest disk drive maker behind Seagate and Western Digital, the latter of which swallowed up Hitachi GST earlier this year, but only after agreeing to sell on some of the aforementioned 3.5in manufacturing assets to Toshiba in order to achieve regulatory approval for the deal.
