IBM has announced two major updates to its mobile management and security portfolio with a major platform update to its Endpoint Manager tool and the acquisition of mobile management specialist Worklight.

The company said its Endpoint Manager for Mobile Devices platform will allow adminsitrators to place policies and controls on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.

The platform will support remote wipe tools as well as policy enforcement, allowing administrators to restrict mobile access to untrusted devices.

Among the platforms which will support by Endpoint Manager for Mobile Devices are Android, iOS, Windows Phone and Symbian.

"As the Bring Your Own Device movement accelerates, it presents new opportunities and challenges for organisations," said IBM mobile vice president Bob Sutor.

"In order for them to take advantage of this trend, it is important that organisations have mobile security and management policies in place.”

Additionally, the tool will integrate with the Endpoint Manager platform for desktops and notebooks, giving firms a single platform for managing security and compliance on servers, PCs and mobile devices.

The company also announced its intent to acquire mobile management specialist Worklight.

In a letter to customers Worklight founder and chief executive Shahar Kaminitz said that the company would continue to support customers throughout the transition.

"Worklight's 'DNA' was always comprised of technological excellence, agility and exceeding customer expectations," Kaminitz wrote.

"In joining the IBM team Worklight will continue to deliver on this promise with extended market reach and a broader mobile technology."

The company said that Worklight would become part of its WebSphere business. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
