Samsung has unveiled the next addition to its Galaxy range of smartphones in the form of the Galaxy S Advance, a few weeks ahead of next month's Mobile World Congress (MWC) event.

The device offers similar specifications to the original Galaxy S but with a 1GHz dual-core processor.

JK Shin, president of IT and mobile communications at Samsung, said the device would help augment the strong line-up of the Galaxy range.

"The Galaxy S Advance adds to the successful track record of the Galaxy smartphone range with a phone that combines power and style with all the versatility of Samsung's Hub services," he said.

The Galaxy S Advance has the same 4in Super AMOLED screen as the Galaxy S, but is curved like the Galaxy Nexus.

It also has the same 5MP rear camera and almost identical dimensions. It will come with a better 768MB of RAM, 8GB or 16GB of internal storage and a 1.3MP front-facing camera.

It will ship with Android 2.3 Gingerbread rather than Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich while Samsung also touted the device's HSPA connectivity which can offer speeds of up to 14.4 Mbit/s.

MWC takes place in Barcelona next month, but it is unclear what the firm will be unveiling at the event, as the Galaxy S III is apparently delayed, although it could unveil its next generation Galaxy Tab.

Samsung recently revealed huge profits based on the success of its popular range of Android devices as it seeks to close the gap on Apple in the battle for smartphone dominance.
