Ofcom has announced it will borrow spectrum from a number of public sector bodies, including the Ministry of Defence (MoD), to ensure there is enough capacity for the smooth running of the Olympic Games later this year.

The organisation explained that the huge increase in demand on spectrum from broadcasters, event officials, security teams and the emergency services means that providing access to spectrum owned by other organisation is the best way to ensure this demand is met.

"The UK's airwaves are already among the most intensively used in the world. The London 2012 Games will significantly increase demand," said Ofcom's chief operating officer, Jill Ainscough.

"Ready and prepared for this challenge, Ofcom recognises there is no room for complacency. We are working behind the scenes to make this capacity available to ensure this demand is met."

As well as providing access to public sector spectrum that's already been allocated, Ofcom will also look to make use of spectrum freed up by the digital switch over and see which unused frequencies in the area can be utilised during the Games.

The organisation revealed it has been testing its spectrum sharing plans at major events in the past 12 months, including the royal wedding and the Formula 1 Grand Prix at Silverstone.

It will also have the chance to see how its plans for the Olympics perform during the Queen's diamond jubilee, which will take place between 2-5 June, when it will be responsible for managing the airwaves used to coordinate and manage events.
