Polycom has launched an application for the iPad 2, Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 designed to allow high-quality video conferencing between tablet devices.
The RealPresence Mobile application will be free to download from the relevant Apple and Android application stores and can run point-to-point conversations between two devices on a standard network connection.
However, business customers already using services from the firm can register the applications with the Polycom Registry to access a raft of additional features, including content sharing, multi-point conferencing and access to call directories.
The application is able to support virtual private network clients so users of the application can join their corporate network for conferences over Wi-Fi, 3G and 4G networks.
The firm's marketing director, Daniel Weisbeck, said the growing use of tablets in the workplace meant there was a real need for applications such as RealPresence Mobile.
"There's a real growth in the use of tablets in the enterprises space now and with that there's also a real demand for the integration of business telepresence systems that can run on devices like the iPad 2," he said.
"The key differentiator for this application is based on the development relationship we have with the vendors so we are able to use our loss packet recovery technology to provide a high-level of call quality."
Polycom's first tablet product was embedded in a purpose-built version of the Galaxy Tab 7" that it unveiled at Mobile World Congress in February, which Weisbeck said had proved hugely popular.
"We were really over-subscribed with demand for the Galaxy Tab 7" product and based on user feedback and development have been working to develop the application to make it as easy to use as possible," he added.
