Apple has taken the wraps off the iPhone 4S, the latest addition to its mobile handset range which runs on the firm's A5 chipset. The 4S offers improved battery life and camera capabilites as part of a series of upgrades to the existing iPhone 4.

Rumours had suggested that an iPhone 4S model would be pitched at a lower cost to compete in the mid-tier markets with Android devices. But the iPhone 4S boasts improved hardware specifications, suggesting an interim handset before the iPhone 5.

Apple claimed that the iPhone 4S CPU is twice as fast as the previous iPhone, and that graphics run up to seven times as fast.

The iPhone 4S also runs on CDMA and GSM so that European and US users can use both networks.

The camera has been upgraded to an 8-megapixel model with 1080p HD video recording, and the new handset features a voice recognition system called Siri that returns information on questions.

The 4S offers improved mobile broadband capabilities by accessing HSPA networks that run at 14.4Mbit/s compared to 7.2Mbit/s on the previous device, while the battery can last for up to 14 hours when used on a 2G connection only, Apple said.

US pricing is $199 for the 16GB version, $299 for the 32GB version and $399 for the 64GB on a two-year contract, and the iPhone 4S will be available for pre-order from 7 October and will launch on 14 October, including in the UK.

O2 confirmed on its Twitter page that it will sell the the iPhone 4S from 14 October.
