Samsung has unveiled its first Windows 7.5 Mango smartphone as the firm aims to offer the most up-to-date devices in the fiercely competitive smartphone market.

The Samsung Omnia W packs a 3.7in Super Amoled touch screen with 800x480 resolution, a 1.4GHz chip, 512MB of RAM and 8GB of internal memory.

Additional features include a 5-megapixel camera with auto focus and LED flash, front-facing VGA camera, accelerometer, magnetometer, gyroscope and GPS.

The Mango update is currently being rolled out to Windows Phone 7 handsets, and offers several new features.

Windows Mango users can multi-task like their Windows-based PC counterparts, integrate all messages over email, text and Facebook into a single thread, and use an improved IE9 browser supporting HTML5.

Key features for business users include the ability to search for hidden networks, support for threaded email conversations, and the ability to synchronise documents to Skydrive and Office 365 and use a Microsoft Lync app.

Samsung has yet to confirm pricing and release date, but expects to ship the device by the end of the year.

The company will be hoping that the Omnia W is as popular as the Galaxy S II, which it claims has passed the 10 million worldwide sales mark.

Samsung said that global sales of the Android handset doubled in eight weeks, and the firm plans to invest £12m in a marketing campaign for the Galaxy range.
