Facebook has unveiled a major update to the site's profile pages, allowing users to chronologically organise all status updates and media files such as photos and videos.
The Timeline feature can be modified to increase the size and visibility of certain items on the page, and is designed to better capture and share significant moments in people's lives, according to Facebook product manager Sam Lessin.
"With Timeline, you have a home for all the great stories you've already shared. They don't just vanish as you add new stuff," he said in a blog post.
Facebook will also offer add-on applications to allow users to share everyday information such as music, recipes and favourite television programmes.
Timeline is currently being tested as a developer feature, and will be available in a few weeks.
"When you get your Timeline, you can choose to publish it immediately or take a few days to review what's there and add anything that's missing," Lessin wrote.
"Now, you and your friends will finally be able to tell all the different parts of your story, from the small things you do each day to your biggest moments."
Facebook has historically had trouble selling members on updates to the platform. Major redesigns have often been accompanied by concerns over privacy and complaints about functionality.
