Seagate launches 4TB portable hard drive for SMBs

Seagate has launched a 4TB external drive aimed at SMBs looking for bulk storage without compromising on portability.

The GoFlex Desk offers the highest capacity currently available on a single disk, and can store up to 2,000 HD movies, according to the manufacturer.

The drive measures 158x124x44mm, and weighs the same as the 11in Apple MacBook Air at 1.08kg, making it extremely portable, the firm added.

Connectivity comes in the form of USB 3.0 or FireWire 800 to USB 2.0 adaptor, and Seagate ships the GoFlex Desk with backup software and encryption to secure confidential business data.

The inclusion of an NTFS driver means that the GoFlex Desk can be used across Windows and Mac machines without having to be reformatted.

The drive can also be used in conjunction with the GoFlex Home adapter to turn it into a network drive, Seagate added.

The 4TB model is available directly from Seagate, and online retailers are expected to start shipping later this month. The drive costs $249.99 in the US, but the firm was unable to confirm UK pricing when contacted by V3.

The release follows on from the launch of the 500GB GoFlex Satellite in May that offered similar benefits for iOS and Android smartphones and tablets, as well as the ability to stream content to any device with a browser and Wi-Fi connectivity by creating a hotspot with a range of 150 feet.
