A large number of Google+ accounts are reported to have been deleted over the weekend, and Google has so far declined to provide any explanation.
Robert Scoble, a Rackspace blogger and Google+ user, claimed that accounts are being frozen because Google wants to set high community standards and to enforce a positive names policy.
Scoble revealed a conversation with Vic Gundotra, Google's senior vice president of social, who confessed that he that had made some tough choices about how to run Google+, and is doing his best to make sure the community sets a positive tone.
"[Gundotra] says it isn't about real names. He says he isn't using his legal name here," Scoble explained.
"He says, instead, it is about having common names and removing people who spell their names in weird ways, like using upside-down characters, or who are using obviously fake names, like 'god' or worse."
Scoble said that Gundotra had admitted to him that Google had "made some mistakes" but that it is "learning".
Gundotra also claimed that his team will change how it communicates with Google+ users and "let them know what they are doing wrong", although so far Google has fallen short on this promise.
At first, the Google+ cull was reported to have been limited to enterprises, including Ford and Sesame Street, but there are now reports from a growing number of individuals that they cannot access their Google+ accounts, and in some cases, related Google services, include Gmail and Docs.
One individual who found herself cut off was celebrity Limor Fried, better known as Lady Ada, although her account has since been restored.
"Google suspended my Limer Fried ‘Ladyada' Google+ profile, no show and tell tonight," she announced on her web site on Saturday.
"It's my real name, a picture of me - my posts and my nickname, I made sure it wasn't ‘Adafruit Industries' and specifically me when Google asked people to only use real names in their profiles. No explanation or reason why, just nuked."
Fried has since publically thanked Google for restoring her profile.

There is an alternative to Facebook & google+
Over the next few years as competition heats up among social networking sites such as Google+, Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin. Content, features, and services will be important but the two most important deciding factors will be Privacy, and the sharing of Ad Revenue. Privacy regardless of social and/or information is not as protected as most people think on social networking sites such as Google+ & Facebook. If you have an email address or real name, there are companies today who are able to track this information. Most search engines that crawl these sites are able to atleast get Jane Doe's User Name. Both Google+, Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin have excellent privacy settings, and different ways to protect it's users privacy, but both fail to address the real issues at hand. The real issues most people have today about privacy is the amount of information these sites are collecting about its users, the way this information is being collected, and how this information is being used. One thing that social networking sites today don't want to tell you, is that any site can be hacked! The only way for sites to combat this problem is to not ask it’s users to provide their real names, and email addresses. As to the sharing of Ad Revenue, there is only one site today that allows it’s users to place their own Ads on both personal & business profiles. ONLYMEWORLD is less the 20% complete, and may not be as savvy as some of the other social networking sites, but early on seem to realize that Privacy and the sharing of Ad Revenue is paramount to both longevity & success in the industry. Their platform is similiar to Facebook, Google+, Twitter, and Linkedin, yet differ because of their willingness to protect it’s users privacy, and the sharing of ad revenue. The best part...It’s Absolutely Free!
