Mobile phone-based authentication firm SecurEnvoy has launched the latest version of its SecureAccess application, designed to offer firms a cheap, easy and secure way of allowing users to authenticate themselves.

SecureAccess version 6.0 effectively turns the user's mobile into an authentication device by generating a one-time SMS-based passcode or a soft token downloaded as an app.

The latter could be particularly useful for those in areas without GSM coverage, according to the firm's co-founder, Steve Watts, who told V3.co.uk that the hacking community is "making a mockery" of the security industry.

"One-factor is not enough. Take the example on our high street where we use two-factor every day when we use chip and Pin. You wouldn't withdraw cash without your card or by simply using a Pin without a card, would you? So why online?" he said.

"Our token-less solution is easier than the traditional token, and we have extended this to include an app. With fast deployment, easy and simple to use, with no helpdesk involvement, the solution is also quick to deploy."

SecureAccess 6.0 is available for devices on most platforms including iOS Android and BlackBerry.

Aside from improved security, the token offers the additional benefit of reducing the involvement of IT admins in the authentication process as everything is managed by the end user, Watts said.
