Skype brings video calling to HTC Desire S and Google Nexus S Android devices

Skype has revamped its Android application to enable users to carry out video calling on a limited number of high-end smartphones running the Google operating system.

The Skype for Android 2.0 application lets users make and receive one-to-one video calls over both Wi-Fi and 3G. Calls can be made to Skype users on devices such as an iPhone, Mac, PC or even a TV.

However, at present the service is limited to the HTC Desire S, Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo, Xperia Pro and the Google Nexus S smartphones.

Skype also confirmed it was working to bring the application to other Android smartphones.

"We are working to make Skype for Android 2.0 available for a wider range of Android handsets soon after launch," the firm said in a statement to V3.co.uk.

Additionally, the interface has been redesigned to simplify navigation. The main menu now allows users to view contacts, edit their profile and check Skype credit. There is also a new "mood message" box at the top of the menu, which allows users to post their current status, similar to Facebook and Twitter.

The Skype 2.0 application is available now and can be downloaded for free from the Android Market or Skype.com/m. A video demonstration is available below.

Earlier this week, Skype previewed a forthcoming version of its VoIP app for the Apple iPad. The dedicated app aims to bring enhanced functionality to the tablet.

The application is pending clearance from Apple. If approved, it will offer users more functionality than the native FaceTime application.

There was no word on a release date or pricing but, like the iPhone application, it is expected imminently and will most likely be free.
