McAfee is looking to extend the reach of its mobile security line with a pair of services for Android tablets and smartphones.

The company said that its Mobile Security Suite would add support for the McAfee SiteAdvisor platform. The addition of SiteAdvisor will allow the company to bundle web security tools into its existing anti-malware and anti-theft platforms.

Additionally, McAfee will be adding support for the WaveSecure platform on Android tablet devices. Acquired when the company purchased TenCube, WaveSecure adds features such as remote lock, wiping and theft notification controls for the Android platform.

While the company said that only Android handsets will be equipped with the SiteAdvisor feature, other versions of the Mobile Security Suite are being offered for BlackBerry, Symbian and Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.5.

The release of the Android services comes amid growing concerns about the security of the platform. With new malware samples on the rise, some in the security industry have begun to voice concerns about the security of the Android platform.

Lianne Caetano, director of product marketing for McAfee consumer mobile solutions, said that despite the attention given to Android malware, physical security remains the top concern for end users.

"The most surprising thing is that though malware is rising, anti-theft and locking is still very important to users," Caetano told V3.co.uk.

"Things like remote lock and wiping are important right now because loss and theft are the biggest threats out there."

The company said the Mobile Security Suite is available on a $29.99 annual subscription, while the WaveSecure will cost tablet users $19.99 per year. Both will be available through the Android market.
