Network Solutions has confirmed that multiple distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks were launched at the company's web portal, but that they appear to have now ceased.

Users of the domain name service started to notice the attacks yesterday and the portal was briefly taken offline before recovering. A second attack today forced another brief outage, knocking out access to DNS servers, hosted web sites, servers, or email accounts for customers.

"Our engineers worked quickly to mitigate the attacks and services are in the process of being restored. We continue to monitor this situation, as potential risk still exists for these attacks to recur," said Network Solutions in a statement.

"We regret the inconvenience and thank the customers and community for helping spread the word. While we do continually take measures to prevent these and other types of issues, unfortunately circumstances like this are beyond our control."

Shashi Bellamkonda, director of social media at Network Solutions, told V3.co.uk that the attacks now appeared to be over, and the company was monitoring the situation closely. An investigation into the attack is ongoing and the company will be working to mitigate any effects and find the perpetrators.

The source of the attacks is not known, but so far there have been no claims of responsibility from LulzSec or any of the other hacking groups involved in Operation Anti-Security. More attacks from the group may be likely after an alleged LulzSec kingpin was arrested in the UK.
