Alfresco has added to its line of collaboration offerings with the Team file-sharing service, which is available via the cloud or local servers and can work on Apple's iOS platform.

The company said the Team software would allow end users to access, edit and share documents across multiple applications and platforms. Running on a local server or an Amazon EC2 instance, the application will enable users to share documents ranging from text files to audio and spreadsheet documents.

Additionally, the platform will include support for Apple's iOS line of devices. Users of iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices will be able to download client software to access the collaboration tools.

"Today's content-driven teams are mobile, social and real-time," said Alfresco chief marketing officer Todd Barr.

"With Alfresco Team, we're innovating with a native iPad app, Google Docs integration and social features that enhance two-way conversation around content."

Alfresco's platform enters an increasingly competitive market for online collaboration tools. In addition to traditional software and service vendors such as Salesforce.com and HP, hardware vendors like Cisco and software firms such as CA have added their own twists to the online collaboration market.

Alfresco, meanwhile, has been best known for its enterprise content management and cloud developer tools.

Alfresco said that it would be offering enterprise users a free 500 document, five-user preview version of the Team platform. Larger deployments start at $2,000 per year for 10 users and about 30,000 documents.
