Teradata has unveiled a storage appliance designed to boost efficiency and cut costs in large-scale data warehouse environments.

The Extreme Data Appliance cabinet enclosure holds up to 72 1TB or 2TB hard drives, and can scale from 23TB to multi-node deployments capable of holding up to 200PB.

The appliance sports two 2.93GHz six-core Intel Xeon processors and up to 48GB of memory, and runs Novell's 64-bit SUSE Linux operating system.

Teradata believes that the appliance can help enterprises reduce the cost of data warehouse deployments, cutting physical footprints by 75 per cent and energy consumption by 60 per cent.

The Extreme Data Appliance also reduces footprint by 50 per cent and increases processor power by 50 per cent over the previous generation of the system.

"Teradata has packed more scalability and affordability into this next-generation analytic appliance, while maintaining Teradata's well-known performance and functionality advantage," said Teradata chief development officer Scott Gnau.

"We are proud that we have helped pave the way for affordable analytics on insight-rich data on a massive scale that helps our customers solve real business problems."
