Google has said that it will focus Android increasingly around hardware options to make the operating system and its applications more useful at controlling physical devices.
Version 3.1 includes the ability to make a tablet act as a USB hub, but the company is opening up a hardware reference platform designed to make it easier for manufacturers to build Android-enabled USB and Bluetooth devices.
Google has released the platforms on an open source basis for hardware manufacturers to use, and has also announced an Android Open Accessories API which will provide a common software standard for new hardware.
The company also unveiled the Android@Home initiative, which aims to provide a common framework for home appliance vendors to build equipment capable of being controlled via an Android handset.
Google announced a deal with Lighting Sciences to see LED bulbs with wireless connections to Android handsets, allowing developers to build applications like an alarm clock that gradually raises light and sound levels.
Products will be available at the end of the year.
