Wyse Technology has introduced a next-generation mobile thin client based on AMD's Fusion processor technology, promising higher performance, HD multimedia capabilities and improved security for mobile workers.

Available immediately, the Wyse X90m7 is a laptop-style device with a 14in display based on Windows Embedded Standard 7, but is designed to connect to virtual desktops and traditional thin client sessions hosted on a server.

The device is certified for Citrix XenDesktop and XenApp, and tested for VMware View and Microsoft's VDI platform, according to Wyse.

A key part of the X90m7's design is its AMD Fusion processor, in this case a 1.6GHz G-T56N chip which integrates a Radeon HD 6310 GPU alongside its twin CPU cores.

This gives the system a boost in multimedia processing capabilities, needed for applications such as IP telephony and videoconferencing, and handling of the Aero graphics desktop experience when users access a Windows 7 virtual desktop session.

The move follows the launch of a Fusion-based desktop thin client in February this year.

"Today's IT decision makers are looking for virtualisation and cloud solutions that address the needs of every user, from the task worker to the advanced knowledge worker, and from those at their desks as well as their mobile workforce," said Wyse vice president of product management, business development and alliances, Ricardo Antuna.

Wyse said that mobile workers are not always travelling sales staff, but often employees who move around a lot within a single building or campus. With a mobile thin client such as the X90m7 with no built-in hard drive, companies can ensure that sensitive data is kept secure.

The company also ships PocketCloud software clients that allow devices such as tablets and smartphones to access remote desktop sessions.
