NetApp has released a set of storage platforms to support high-performance and bandwidth-heavy applications.

The E-Series storage systems are designed for areas such as data analysis using the open source Hadoop platform, which allows enterprises to create scalable, distributed computing platforms.

The E-Series has been targeted in particular at companies looking to craft large-scale web applications.

NetApp believes that the adoption of Hadoop requires storage platforms which can support large-scale analytics, and is offering a 16- to 32-node system based on its E2600 storage appliance.

"Hadoop democratises access to previously untapped data and information," said NetApp senior vice president Rich Clifton.

"Our solution allows enterprise adopters to gain business advantage by analysing vast quantities of information in real time."

The Hadoop system is due to arrive by the second quarter of the year.

NetApp is also targeting the E-Series devices at high-end video applications, such as full-motion video capture and surveillance by government agencies and military groups.

Powering the platform will be the E5400 storage appliance. The 4U system will support up to 120TB of storage from 60 drive bays and offers 6GB/sec of throughput.

The company said that a full-motion video storage platform based on the E5400 will be offered through government-focused resellers and service providers.
