Juniper Networks has unveiled a routing system designed to help businesses manage the growing use of mobile, video and cloud-based applications on wide area networks (WANs).

Universal WAN will allow companies to manage the deployment and use of applications in locations such as datacentres, campus facilities and remote office branches, according to Juniper.

Mike Marcellin, vice president of marketing and business strategy for Juniper's Platform Systems Group, claimed that the new tool is ideal for helping IT managers meet the challenges of growing networks.

"Juniper's Universal WAN was built to improve the economics of enterprise routing with an easy-to-deploy solution that has the flexibility to keep pace with evolving applications and traffic patterns," he said.

"Network managers now have a solution that meets the performance needs of the network today while building in the scalability for tomorrow's WAN traffic requirements."

To complement the Universal WAN announcement, Juniper has launched a series of Ethernet routers, the MX5, MX10 and MX40, which offer speeds of 20GBit/s, 40Gbit/s and 60Gbit/s respectively to help businesses support next-generation services.

The devices can be scaled up to Juniper's top level MX80 devices to allow businesses to increase hardware and networking requirements as they grow.

The Universal WAN is managed by Juniper's JunOS operating system to help IT managers provision and operate switches and routers.

The product is available for orders today with shipments beginning in the third quarter of 2011.
