BT is extending the reach of its high-speed copper networks, promising to provide 80 per cent of the UK population with speeds approaching 20Mbit/s.
The company will enable its ADSL2+ Wholesale Broadband Connect copper service at over 1,000 exchanges, and increase its reach to 15.5 million premises.
BT claimed that 2.25 million people are already using the telco's high-speed fibre services, and that 30,000 additional lines are being upgraded every week.
The company expects the increased speeds to benefit anyone who requires a faster internet connection, such as gamers and home workers.
"Running over BT's 21st Century Network, Wholesale Broadband Connect allows communications providers to provide broadband customers with greater control, choice and flexibility as well as higher speeds," said Cameron Rejali, managing director for products at BT Wholesale.
"It supports the growing demand for high-speed broadband access to a range of online services, including TV, gaming online and multiple VoIP services."
BT also announced that it has increased the number of live fibre nodes in its network to 1,000, and is expecting to reach another 90 by the end of the year.

Still waiting for LLU
I to have been patiently waiting for LLU to arrive at my rural exchange just outside Norwich. When I signed with Talk Talk approx. 5 years ago I was assured that once LLU arrived I would receive FREE Broadband! On my tariff. I'm still waiting and paying £15 a month for a service that is slowly deteriorating, I pay for up to 8MB last year I was getting between 6 and 7MB. Following some recent major work at my local exchange by Talk Talk, my speeds have dropped to an average of between 4 and 5MB weekdays and many times less than 512KB evenings and weekends. Obviously a time to switch I think.

High Speed Copper?
BT are investing in copper? Are they mad? The price of copper has sky rocketed because of the demand from China. Surely it would make sense to replace their old copper network with fibre throughout. Then they actually would have a "Super Fast' network. All they are doing now is creating hundreds, if not thousands of network bottlenecks. And the traffic management will be even worse for users, than it already is because of line capacity shortages.
