Microsoft has surpassed two million handset sales for its Windows Phone 7 platform roughly one month after announcing that 1.5 million had been reached.
The company said in an interview with news site AllThingsD that it had surpassed the milestone in a single quarter.
Microsoft launched Windows Phone 7 in October, promising a complete redesign of its mobile operating system in the wake of the Windows Mobile failures.
Microsoft has been keen to push the platform, featuring Windows Phone 7 devices heavily in its 2011 presentation at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The platform surpassed the 1.5 million mark in its first six weeks, and some analysts have predicted that Windows Phone 7 will be the fastest growing platform on the market in 2011.
The OS faces stiff competition from its more established rivals, however. Apple's latest iPhone model took just three days to surpass 1.7 million sales, while Android devices have been setting sales records for companies such as Samsung.

Shipments - not sales
These are shipments to outlets - not sales to customers as quotes sales of other phones are. Also only 500,000 more shipped in the last month? Windows Phone 7 sales are slowing if that is the case.
