BARCELONA: LG has announced what it claims to be the world's first "tri-dual" 3D smartphone, as the manufacturer aims to become a leader in the smartphone market after a successful 2010.
The Optimus 3D will ship with a dual-core, dual-channel processor and dual memory to enable faster browsing, multi-tasking and a smoother multimedia experience, LG said.
Other key features include a 4.3in WVGA screen, a 1GHz dual-core, dual-channel Texas Instruments processor, 8GB of internal memory, 4GB of DDR2 RAM, and a 5-megapixel dual-lens camera. The device will be powered by a 1,500 mAh battery.
However, the most intriguing feature will be the ability to view images on the 4.3in WVGA screen in 3D.
Users will be able to switch to a 3D interface using the 3D Hot Key. This will bring up a 3D-dedicated interface for the gallery, camera, games and YouTube 3D applications.
LG has signed a number of 3D content agreements, the most prominent being with YouTube, so that users will be able to record a 3D movie and upload it in 3D to the video sharing site.
Connectivity-wise the handset will support, HSPA+, DLNA/HDMI 1.4, DLNA, GPS and Wi-Fi.
Disappointingly, the Optimus 3D will ship with Android 2.2 Froyo, but LG said that an upgrade to Android 2.3 Gingerbread will be made available shortly after release.
LG plans to release the handset in the second quarter with prices to be confirmed. Orange has said that it will carry the "ground-breaking" device when it is launched in the UK.
Francisco Jeromino, research manager for European mobile devices at analyst firm IDC, was impressed with the LG Optimus 3D.
"LG wants to be a real contender in the smartphone business, but it has a lot to do compared to 2010," he said.
Jeronimo also pointed out the increasing importance of DLNA for mobile devices.
"With Samsung, LG, ZTE counting support for DLNA, the living room is getting strategic for mobile companies," he added.
