Intel has finalised its acquisition of security firm McAfee six months after the £4.9bn deal was announced.

The deal merges the world's largest CPU manufacturer with the second largest computer security vendor.

Intel said that the acquisition will increase the integration of security at the silicon level, and that McAfee's products will be integrated into PCs and embedded computers.

"Intel has added security as a third pillar of what people demand from their experiences with personal computers and other connected devices," said Renée James, Intel senior vice president and general manager.

"The acquisition of McAfee adds not only world-leading security products and technologies to Intel's computing portfolio, but brings incredibly talented people focused on delivering products and services that help make connecting to the mobile internet safer and more secure."

Approval of the deal was not always assured. Shortly after the companies announced the merger, regulators in the EU cast a careful eye on the plan and its possible anti-trust implications.

Eventually the merger was approved after Intel agreed that it would not use its position to prevent other vendors developing security products for its chips.
