A damning review of Microsoft’s new Zune media player has predicted that the player will be dead in the water within six months.
Writing in the Chicago Sun-Times, reviewer Andy Ihnatko pulled no punches in his assessment of the player. He found it difficult to install and lacking compatibility with either Windows Media Player or Microsoft’s Playsforsure scheme. It is also, he believes, loaded with features that record companies like but which users will hate.
"Avoid, is my general message,” he writes.
“The Zune is a square wheel, a product that's so absurd and so obviously immune to success that it evokes something akin to a sense of pity.”
Other points of contention include the lack of support for podcasts (described as “insanity”), Wi-Fi that can only be used to send heavily DRMed tracks rather than useful features like wireless synchronisation, and the fact that Microsoft pays a fee to record companies for each player it sells.
"These devices are just repositories for stolen music, and they all know it, " Ihnatko reports Doug Morris, chief executive of Universal Music Group as saying.
"So it's time to get paid for it."
He concludes that as Microsoft has chosen to ignore consumer needs in favour of the desires of the recording industry the player will be dead within six months, and he wishes it good riddance.

It's Just A Music Player...
Reading these comments you'd think we were discussing the Holy Grail. Relax, guys! No need for rabid responses from either side. Enough with the FUD. Ihnatko is an established tech writer, not a Luddite. His article never mentions the Zune's screen size. He gives specific reasons why he dislikes the Zune -and not one comment here addresses those reasons. If you want people to take your comments seriously, check your facts, respond to the issues raised in the article, and -for heaven's sake - try to write like a literate grownup instead of an illiterate teenager. Spell-checking has been standard on both PCs and Macs for years... As for the Zune - The only feature it brings to the marketplace is ?squirting? heavily-DRMed songs to other Zunes. There?s great potential there, but only if Microsoft stops sleeping with the record companies and starts considering what its customers want and need. Buy a Zune! Buy an iPod! Or don?t. It?s JUST A MUSIC PLAYER, not a religion.

Elegance
Elegance is such a lovely word Not paired with MS that thoughts absurd The iPod is an awesome design And artists see truly something sublime So take your Zune with its Nash Rambler face and its sqeaky tune and leave sans trace For the Zune appeals to bean counters and clerks a boring lot most would call jerks So howl at the moon and damn it to hell For Apple is winning And Zone's a bad smell

Zune sucks
All of you idiots are just a bunch of ms whores, the zune. I bet all of you live with your mom and play 360 all day. Apple and Sony are going to kill ms and they'll soon run crying back to their os monopoly. I hope everything they make fails just like this piece of shit is doing now.

Poorly Done
I was just wondering, have you experienced the Zune first hand? It's not very intelligent to write an article you know NOTHING about, thanks for delivering a bias article.

Ummm.......brain anyone?
Yes we can all denounce the zune for its misconceptions and mislead ideas, however for the real computor music lover this device is full of charm. Of course microsoft is going to make it nearly impossible to put anykind of music on to this player but as long as we still have freeware such as file rippers and convertors we can all get past these annoying moments to truly taste the sweetness which is music. And has the i pod done any better? It dosent let you take tracks from the i pod to your computor but yet we all now know that you can go directly into it like a hard drive and suck the ripeness from it. And although I do not call this a true i pod kiler I do think that if microsoft integrated some more capability on to it ( letting you store and read documents, files , maybe even games , or let you write something on a train wihta compatable light keyboard this product could launch itself into the mainstream. Microsoft will never be able to beat apple at its own game but apple will never be able to beat microsofts game either. It's all about how these products can be used and where the makers will take them. Apple really has not gotten past theidea of a media player and the zune is still young, its anybody's guess what will happen

Zune comment
The biggest thing going for Zune is that it isn't ipod. The arrogance and sense of superiority of Apple makes ipod a product line that is ripe for competition. Those who purchased original ipods with terrible interfaces, batteries and poor service, remember product rollouts.

Don't lsten to the Zune reviews, test the Zune for yourself!
I am tired of the Zune Reviews. I swear, Apple must have paid everyone off with all their IPOD money. I have had my Zune for nearly 2 weeks and it is a great player. It sounds amazing since the Zune playback is at 192 Kbps rather than the 128Kbps that you get from an IPOD. I recently purchased a CD and played it in my car on my Alpine Car Stereo then I ripped it and played it with the Zune plugged in to the Aux jack on the back of my stereo. The Zune actually seemed to sound a little better. The user interface is easy to use. Zune software is easy to use and it is not a big deal to pull your music into it if you use Media Player. It searches for your music when you install the Zune software on your computer. No problem. I don't understand why reviewers want Microsoft to fail with this product? I am very satisfied and very upset with all of the negative press. It isn't accurate. I am not a professional reviewer but I do understand technology and I have found it very impressive. Maybe it is different if you don't use it the way I do. I ripped all of my CDs to MP3 files at 256Kbps and Zune formats them to play at the best size when I sync with the Zune. I haven't used the Zune marketplace yet because I already have a lot of music. I have ripped everything I own into files that can be used on any device at 256kbps MP3. Up to this point though, I have been very satisfied. Currently, I have over 3600 songs on Zune, 1 picture, and one video and I have 2.9GB of space remaining. Give Zune a chance. Go buy one and try it out and bring it back if you don't like it but give it a chance. If you have been reading some of the reviews I think you will be surprised at how nice it really is!

wtf?
are you kidding? you sir, are a moron. the zune is better than the ipod in every way, bigger screen, wifi, pictures and videos look better.. and the list goes on. there are too many damn apple lovers out there who are willing to spend 1000$ on a 500$ pc, and pay the same price for an ipod when the zune has so many more features. idoits..

No brains
I read the article mentioned about the Zune. The guy has no clue how to operate anything technical. He even mentioned the screen is 2.5" when reality it is 3". He is iPod brainwashed. Nuff said.

Zune branded 'a complete, humiliating failure'
No. The reviewer is either high, jealous, or both. The Zune will destroy the iPod by the time it is finished, because it is better (remember this is just the first incarnation of it as well) . Is there WiFi in iPod's? Ahhhhh....no. The beginning of the end. It's the same thing with the Xbox 360. It is delievering it's death blow to the PS3 as we speak. Gears of War anybody? Game over.
