LibertySurf, the pan-European internet service provider, has launched an unmetered internet access service in the UK.

The ISP, a joint venture between retailer Kingfisher and the Arnault Group, will offer unmetered off-peak internet access for an annual fee of £20.

The service, available to BT home phone line users, offers unmetered net access from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday. Customers will not need to pay any extra or hidden charges.

LibertySurf will also offer a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week unmetered internet service for a £35 annual charge. Customers will receive 24-hour free technical support through an 0800 number or email.

The service will be on sale in 260 Comet and 86 MVC (Music and Video) stores across the UK from 12 May. There are also plans to launch in Woolworths stores in June.

LibertySurf said its aim is to make internet access truly accessible and affordable for the whole of the UK.

Paul Myers, managing director of LibertySurf UK, said: "Most people are frozen into indecision, confused by the complex and often contradictory offers being made by our competitors. We aim to build a business based on simple clear products and services with no strings and no hidden charges. We want to liberate the net."

During recent months UK consumers have been inundated with the promise of 'free' internet access, as ISPs battle it out to see who can sign up the most users. However, the rush to launch services quickly appears to have left many consumers confused and disappointed with the offerings.

vnunet.com receives several emails a day from readers who have problems accessing or connecting services, and several ISPs have admitted they have had problems coping with the huge demand for the service.
