Google has released an unlocked Android-based handset designed to help developers build applications for the mobile platform.
A posting on the company's Android Developers Blog offers a programme to help developers get hold of a handset, and an update to the development toolkit, Android 1.0 SDK release 2.
The Android Dev Phone 1 is a SIM-unlocked and hardware-unlocked device that is not tied to any network, unlike the first Android-based phone to go on sale, the T-Mobile G1.
Developers must register on the Android Market web site in order to purchase a Dev Phone 1, which costs $399 (£268).
Google warned that the handset is not intended for ordinary users, since it can be configured with system software not provided or supported by Google.
