RIM has unveiled a more powerful version of the BlackBerry Curve that will be ready to update to the BlackBerry 6 operating system.

Key upgrades in the BlackBerry Curve 3G include the addition of high-speed internet access, upgraded Wi-Fi and an optical trackpad to replace the trackball.

The smartphone is also faster than its predecessor, and features improved battery life, according to RIM.

The Curve 3G retains the trademark Qwerty keyboard, but RIM has persisted with the low 320 x 240 resolution TFT LCD display and 2-megapixel camera.

Mike Lazaridis, president and co-chief executive of RIM, claimed that the Curve 3G provides an attractive and accessible choice that will help convince consumers who have not yet bought a smartphone.

"The new BlackBerry Curve 3G is a perfect choice for busy people looking for a user-friendly 3G smartphone to help stay connected with their friends, family and co-workers," he said.

RIM will ship the device with the current version 5 of the operating system, but this will be upgradable to the new BlackBerry 6 OS. The new OS is set to include multi-touch controls and better integration of social networking functions into the traditionally business-focused operating system.

The smartphone will be released this month, and RIM told V3.co.uk that release dates, prices and network providers will be announced in due course. There was no word on when BlackBerry 6 OS will be released.

RIM recently struck a deal with the Saudi government over the monitoring of information on its devices.
