Sony will launch a version of its double layer DVD recorders for the Mac market.

The DRX-710UL will go on sale next month bundled with Roxio's Toast 6 Lite and is priced at $230. The double-layer DVDs can hold four hours of high quality MPEG-2 video or up to 8.5GB of data, music or images.

Unfortunately, recording dual-layer DVDs is still very slow compared to other media. The new burner can only manage x2.4 speeds, compared to x48 for CD-Rs.

The burner can be mounted in a 5.25in drive bay and is also available as a standalone unit. It has FireWire and high speed USB connectors to transfer data.

In addition to the Toast application, the drive will come bundled with a full software suite from Nero for Windows 2000 and XP for PC users.
