Many data loss incidents are preventable

Endpoint security firm Safend today expanded its portfolio of data protection products with the launch of a new content inspector tool and a data discovery solution.

Endpoint Inspector and Endpoint Discoverer complete the vendor's Data Protection Suite alongside endpoint control tool Safend Protector and encryption product Safend Encryptor, said the firm's vice president of product management, Edy Almer.

Inspector is a content filtering tool that can alert the administrator when sensitive information is being transferred somewhere it shouldn't, whether by email, web, USBs, PDAs or printers.

Discoverer, meanwhile, has been designed to locate and classify data and help administrators identify gaps in data protection initiatives, said the firm.

Almer argued that with legal requirements for monitoring of sensitive customer data increasing in the UK, firms need to think about solutions that can mitigate the risk of data loss.

"The problem with data loss prevention solutions is that many need 12 to 18 months before they show any benefits, by which time the requirements may have changed," he added. "A small enterprise or SMB can take these solutions and with a few days' help from a reseller can reap immediate benefits."

Almer added that the Inspector tool could be used to prevent sensitive data being transferred from a secure internal group to elsewhere in the organisation, as well as externally.
