NVidia touts 128MB as new graphics standard

NVidia has stated that that 128MB graphics cards are the new standard, and that demand is dropping for anything less.

Bernhard Gleisser, director of business sales for nVidia in Europe, told vnunet.com that the demand for high-end graphics cards is very strong, and that users are not happy with older equipment.

"People do not want 64MB any more," he said. "We all know how much the market changes from one day to the next. 128MB is it at the moment."

But the comments caused amusement among other graphics card vendors.

"128MB might be the limit in their minds, but there will always be a place for cards with smaller memory, Asia in particular," said Adrian Thompson, global marketing director at Sapphire Technology. "We are still selling plenty of 8MB cards. The demand is still there."

Thompson pointed out that PCs are becoming increasingly adept at memory sharing. Lower end graphics cards are also needed in systems like servers where graphics is not such a priority.
