Google extends control of UK search market

Google picked up 74.2 per cent of all UK searches in April

Research published today reveals that Google Sites continued its domination of the UK search market with 74.2 per cent of all searches in April.

Research firm comScore found that eBay ranked second with six per cent, followed by Yahoo Sites at 4.3 per cent and Microsoft Sites at 3.4 per cent.

Two UK groups of sites, Rightmove (0.8 per cent) and Bebo.com (0.7 per cent), ranked among the top 10.

Popular social networking property Facebook.com claimed 1.8 per cent market share in April.

According to the research, there were 4.1 billion searches conducted in the UK during April, more than in any other European country. Some 31.2 million UK internet users made at least one search during the month.

UK surfers conducted an average of 130 searches during the month, or more than four per day.
