Microsoft has revealed that the upcoming Internet Explorer 9 web browser will not work on Windows XP systems.
The company confirmed earlier media reports, saying that the performance and security limitations of the operating system would not be able to handle the new version of the browser.
Talk of dropping support for XP began this week after Microsoft unveiled the first preview versions of IE9. The browser will feature support for the new HTML 5 standards and will sport an improved Java engine.
The news comes as Microsoft continues to nudge both business and consumer users away from Windows XP and towards the new Windows 7.
Originally slated to end its support lifecycle in 2011, the company decided to push the deadline back three years due to the prevalence of XP systems and the lack of uptake for its successor, the much-maligned Windows Vista.
Though XP is still supported, the company has advised users to move to Windows 7 systems, citing the added security features of the operating system designed to limit the risk and severity of malware infections.
Those benefits have been underscored by recent patch releases where critical vulnerabilities for Windows XP posed a far lesser threat to Vista and Windows 7 systems.

Do you agree?
Oh dear
Never mind! The OS is outdated, so it is about time people updated. I agree with MS with regards to not supporting XP. How many companies support products after nearly 10 yrs? XP has had more than enough support IMHO. Step out of the dark ages and stop complaining.

This may just make users switch browser - to a competitor.
OK, so MS is trying to nudge people towards Win7, but there are still a huge numberof people running XP as it works and runs at a good speed on their machines (including many netbooks) So, rather than push people to Win7 it may just make them use a different (competitors) browser, especially now many have a "Browser Choice" shortcut on their desktop. Not quite the intension that MS had in mind ...

Mainstream XP support gone next month
This article is somewhat misleading. There's a difference between "critical support" and "mainstream support". Mainstream Support for Windows XP ends April 2010, and for Windows Server 2003 in July 2010. Most users will not have access to critical support resources.

ugghh!
screw ms. i had an idea they were going to do this. you'd figure that they had stopped supporting windows media player for xp in 2006 and ie for win 2000 in 2006. almost 60% use xp still. MOVE TO FIREFOX!

No IE9 for Windows XP
Typical arrogant, greedy Microsoft...abandoning XP users many of whom cannot afford to be forever upgrading to new computers etc and I note many advertisements for computers at super prices using "Genuine XP" operating system. I am a pensioner on limited income and I will keep with XP until I have saved up then switch to a MAC.

No XP support for IE9, says Microsoft
This has nothing to do with any incompatibility issue as MS would have us believe. It is purely money driven. MS - in their opinion - must be seen as innovative and "cutting edge" but this is all to the detriment of older OS's regardless of the fact that thousands have spent small fortunes buying them. I can't imagine that it is beyond the wit of MS to devise an "Explorer" system compatible with XP, Vista and 7 but of course they wouldn't do this for fear of losing money, so they push everyone, regardless of personal preference or income, towards their latest OS. You can bet they are, at this very moment, beavering away at a successor to W7 where IT will become obsolete in a couple of years and to hell with the punters

No XP support for IE9, says Microsoft
Suspect this is more likely to sound the death knell for IE9 than XP

No XP support for IE9 ???
I paid for Windows XP which works very well but I cannot just drop it to reinstall Windows 7. Bill Gates has made a lot of money from people like me, over many, many years, who have faithfully paid for every OS and program upgrade since early DOS days. Some OS versions weren't reliable but I couldn't / didn't complain or ask for my money back. Please give us a fair return on XP!! We will still support Windows 7 when it is time to do so.
