Microsoft has released a first test version of Windows Media Player 11 which features a new user interface and advanced search capabilities, and the Urge online media service.
The software giant developed the service with MTV which will manage the store. Urge will offer downloads of MTV programmes, original content, online radio stations and more than two million songs.
The partners aim for the new service to dethrone Apple's iTunes media player and store. Consumers will not be able to play content purchased from Urge on iPod players due to incompatible digital rights management technologies.
"Urge distinguishes itself through handcrafted programming, innovative music discovery features and unique integration with Windows Media Player 11," said Van Toffler, president of MTV's Networks Music/Logo/Films Group.
Individual tracks are priced at 99c. Monthly subscriptions start at $99 per year or $9.95 per month for music that can be played on a computer only.
A $149 annual or $14.95 monthly fee allows consumers to play the media on supported portable devices as well. Urge offers a 14-day free trial to new users.
Windows Media Player 11 supports additional online media services, including Napster, MSN Music and Live365, but Urge will be the "recommended" digital music service.
The software will be bundled with the forthcoming Windows Vista operating system, but also works on systems running XP.
The beta is available for download from Microsoft's Media Player website.
