Microsoft has begun distributing a pre-release version of the latest bug fix for Windows XP to its network of beta testers.

Service Pack 2 Release Candidate 1 (RC1), due for a full release before 1 July, is designed to improved security for Windows XP.

It adds better memory protection and improved execution protection designed to lock down parts of the system in order to make it harder for viruses to run, said the company.

The pack includes the 'Security Center', an interface for users to configure firewall and antivirus protection, and a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer that prevents websites from opening unwanted windows on screen.

Bluetooth support is added to Windows XP for the first time. The pack also includes upgrades for the Tablet PC and Media Center editions of the operating system.

Service Pack 2 forms part of Microsoft's Trustworthy Computing initiative.
