Fujitsu is in talks with the union about pensions

Workers union Unite has announced that following talks, the planned industrial action at IT firm Fujitsu will not be going ahead.

Workers were set to begin a three-day strike today, in the biggest such action taken against a UK technology firm. Unite said last week that workers would strike over pay, pensions, and redundancies.

Last week, we reported that 75 per cent of Unite members voted in favour of industrial action, with 92 per cent voting for action short of a strike.

Today in a statement, Unite said that following "constructive" talks, a number of new steps have been agreed, and consequently the strike will no longer go ahead today as planned. Fortunately for those workers who have stayed away from work, Fujitsu has agreed not to take any action against employees who did not find out in time that the strike had been called off.

Talks about pensions – a bone of contention between the parties – have been extended until the new year (31 January), while no workers slated for redundancy will be forced to leave before this date either.

The parties will continue to discuss the situation, Unite added.
