Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has launched its first Blu-ray disc titles.
The seven movies are timed to coincide with the first commercially available Blue-ray disc player from Samsung Electronics and a Blu-ray disc compatible Vaio PC from Sony.
The first movies are 50 First Dates, The Fifth Element, Hitch, House of Flying Daggers, XXX: State of the Union, The Terminator and Underworld Evolution.
The first Blu-ray Disc title from Sony itself, Ultraviolet, will debut one week later on 27 June. Ultraviolet is a sci-fi thriller starring Milla Jovovich which was filmed entirely in high-definition.
Sony is betting that the film's visuals are dramatically enhanced by the Blu-ray format, making it an ideal way for consumers to experience Blu-ray for the first time.
Sony Pictures will release Basic Instinct 2: Risk Addiction on Blu-ray on 11 July. Stealth, Species, The Benchwarmers and The Last Waltz will debut on Blu-ray disc on 25 July.
