Apple has confirmed rumours that it is to open its first UK retail store, in London's prestigious Regent Street, before the end of the year.

In a statement given to vnunet.com, the company said the store would "open this calendar year".

The new store is expected to sell Apple's hardware, software and services, including the popular iPod personal music player. And, like its 70 sister stores in the US and two in Japan, it is also expected to offer special events and demos.

Apple UK and Ireland has a large network of resellers authorised to sell and service its products, including household-name high-street chains like Dixons and PC World. But its plans to expand its brand into Europe seem centred on the upcoming UK flagship store.

The store's location is expected to be a 20,000sq ft premises at 229-247 Regent Street, which is currently shrouded in scaffolding while final renovation work on the building is completed.

Rumours that Apple was set to expand its 'bricks and mortar' presence into Europe via the UK began earlier this year after hawk-eyed enthusiasts spotted the company advertising for Mac-mad experts to be store staff.

These rumours forced Apple chief financial officer Fred Anderson to confirm the plans soon afterwards.

Suggestions that Apple is to open its store on 20 November have been circulating on an internet fan site dedicated to Apple stores, prompting the company's statement.
