Barry Schuler, chief operating officer at media giant AOL Time Warner's America Online division, will leave his post to lead a newly-formed group focused on developing digital services, the company has confirmed.
His place will be taken by Bob Pittman, currently co-chief operating officer of the AOL group. Pittman is also tipped to take sole charge of the entire media group when chief executive officer Gerald Levin steps down in May.
The changes come at a time when AOL is facing pressure from Wall Street to perform, and is battling with falling online advertising revenues.
"Pittman is taking on this role at a time of opportunity and challenge," the company said in a statement. "Nobody understands AOL's operations and potential better."
The merger of AOL and Time Warner has not so far produced the converged media giant that the company had once promised.
