Nintendo's Wii console outsold Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3 in January, according to new US sales data.
The Wii will be the world's most common video games console by the end of this year, one analyst has predicted.
Nintendo sold an estimated 375,000 Wii consoles in January, compared to sales of 269,000 PS3s and 230,000 Xbox 360s, according to the latest data from research firm NPD.
Nintendo also came out ahead on handheld games consoles, recording 251,000 Nintendo DS sales, compared to 230,000 for Sony's PlayStation Portable.
Video games sales were actually weaker than the same month one year ago, the NPD report found.
"Given the huge number of hardware systems sold in December, inventory shortages could be the biggest contributor to the softer-than-expected sales," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier.
Separate research from iSuppli suggests that 30.2 million Wii consoles will be in homes around the world at the end of 2008.
However, iSuppli research analyst Pam Tufegdzic forecast that the PS3 could regain the overall sales lead by 2011.
Global games console sales will continue to increase up until 2010 as vendors prepare next-generation consoles, according to Evan Wilson, a senior research analyst at Pacific Crest Securities.
"We believe that peak industry sales will occur in 2010 when Microsoft is likely to introduce its next console," he said. "Nintendo will likely launch before then, and 2010 is also likely to coincide with the end of the DS and PSP cycles."

Stop Hating!!
Stop hating on the Wii. If you can't handle the success of the Wii then you need to grow up. It's not Nintendo's fault that MS and Sony decided to go they way they did. It's not Nintendo's fault Sony put their price tag out of the range of common gamer. Even some die hard fan of Sony don't have a PS3 do to the price tag. Plus what has Sony's system shown that blows MS xbox360 out of the water? answer.....nothing. Nintendo made a wise move and it paid off. Ya the software isn't there yet but that's not because of Nintendo. 3rd party companies where banking on Sony to run away what the market do to the success of the PS2 so they invested a lot if money and faith in Sony. MS came out swinging and made everyone take note that there is some power under the hood of the Xbox360 plus its easyer to make games on. Then Nintendo went a whole different way and gave the market something totally of its own....the Wii. So MS took the momentum away from Sony. Sony start losing their exclusive games to MS. Now Nintendo is the most popular system in the world, so now there's money to be made on the system that nobody gave a chance to win. 2009 you will see graphic on the Wii that you didn't think was possible. Why? Because the 3rd party will begin to pump some real money behind Nintendo because Wii is #1.

Wii may have problems
Whilst I am a huge fan of the Wii, and do have one in my house, my main console is the PS3, which I find personally more engrossing on many levels. The wii is great for multiplayer but I'd never use it for single player games and very rarely use it alone unlike the ps3. To the main point of my post, it has been reported that the sixaxis controller will be taken to new levels over the coming year. Sony have been working with games developers and it is rumoured that many of the forthcoming ps3 games will utilise it quite substantially. It is also rumoured that the sixaxis can actually produce better results that that which has been seen on the wii to date. If this is indeed the case, all of a sudden the Wii will cease to become a unique console but the poor mans ps3. What has not been made clear is if the sixaxis has more capability than the wiimote or whether the wii developers have been lazy thus far as they have not needed to outshine any other motion sensitive controller and therefore just need to pull their collective finger out. Either way there could be problems ahead for the Wii, and we already know the 360 will be dead and buried soon enough as it has nothing over either of the other consoles.

A great console
Nintendo did what everyone else was afraid to do: They released a unique and innovative product that relied on suburb game play as opposed to graphics. Now, Nintendo is pulling in sales from people who would have never bought a gaming console because Nintendo is offering the consumer so much more than just a controller and the same old games that just look a bit better. Wii FTW

The wii is a console, and it's a better selling console than the ps3
Nintendo saw that both M$ and sony were going with really costly systems, so they decided to take a different approach. They made something that was economical and fun in a unique way. They realized that most college and highschool students would rather not fork out $400 for a video game system. Booya
